Presentation Outline

Drawing upon real-world experience and examples I will customize a program to fit your needs and format. Here is the step-by-step approach more active listening.

Step 1: Suspend judgment about the talker: We listen more effectively to people we like. Often we judge the talker before they open their mouth. To listen more actively it is important to suspend judgment.

Step 2: Acknowledge you can do better: Research shows that by realizing you can be a better listener and practicing listening skills, you can experience up to a 50% improvement in listening.

Step 3: Purposeful practicing: Becoming aware of when you are not listening and then practice listening the listening skills in this program. Create a mental framework for the ideas presented. We retain ideas better than facts.

Step 4: Ask permission to pause: Learn the power of the ‘pause.’ By pausing strategically and testing understanding you create a better listening experience and encourage the talker to tell you more.

Step 5: It is ok to not understand or disagree: Often when we don’t understand or we disagree we stop listening. It is ok if you don’t agree or understand. You can learn to use this to your advantage.

Step 6: Don’t be afraid of silence: Rather than being uncomfortable with silence in a conversation learn to use it to your advantage.

Step 7: Take notes: Use your notes to summarize or reflect what you have heard.

This session is dynamic, engaging and memorable. Attendees leave the program with real skills they can implement immediately and experience a dramatic increase listening effectively.
